Success story from Child Guide Clinic (CGC), Dolakha

Sunita was 16 years old girl in class 9. She was referred to our Child Guidance Clinic by her teacher for fainting problem. As our diagnosis, she was suffering from conversion disorder. Because of the fainting problem, her school attendance, academic performance and other daily activities were decreasing day after day. Sunita also started to have other health problems. Most of the time, she was complaining about headache, muscle pain and indigestive problem. She couldn't sleep without having sedative drug. She was hospitalized 3 times in different hospitals but her physical condition did not improved.

Sunita was from middle class family. The socio economic status of her family was good. Father was teacher and mother was housewife. She had one eldest sister and one young brother.

According to our investigation, there was psychological cause behind the problem. In three months, five counselling sessions were arranged with her and two sessions were sat with her parents. From the second session, she shared her problems and painful experiences. Sunita had relationship problems with her boyfriend. He wanted to leave her due to the mismatch of caste and socio economic status because he was Brahamin by caste (high ritualistic caste) and from rich family. Similarly, family and neighbors were also blaming their relationship.

Counselling sessions were very beneficial for Sunita. She talked a lot about her tension and source of anxiety. She realized that her past painful experiences were related to her psychological and physical problems. She developed skills and tools to cope better with her problems. Now, she feels much better. She has a better acceptation of her reality and the cultural practices in Nepal. There is no fainting problem or other physical problems anymore. As the report of parents and teachers, the academic performance of Sunita is continuously improving and she is going to school on a regular basis.
