March 2009 - October 2009

CMC-Nepal is continuing the community mental health programme in 9 districts (Gorkha, Kaski, Baglung, Parbat, Syangja, Palpa, Gulmi, Rupendehi and Nawalparasi) of the Western Region and also Dhading, Makwanpur, Bajhang, Surkhet, Mugu, Ilam, Okhaldunga districts. CMC-Nepal is building the capacity of doctors and paramedical staff through the training and supervisions. A total of 2,764 new cases have been identified and received mental health service from 30 health facilities during January to June 2009. 14 additional health workers are trained in mental health in Aug/Sep 2009 and received .

The support in Okhaldunga Community Hospital and Tansen Mission Hospital is also continuing. The staff from social service centres have been trained and supervised in psychosocial counselling.

Mental health camp was organized in Mugu district, where 118 psychiatric cases received direct mental heatlh service from psychiatrist. In the same time, Mental health exhibitions were organized and approximately 200 people received basic mental health informations.

The community radio programme for this year (2009/10) is now in process of broadcasting from eleven FM radio stations (Shreenagar FM/Palpa, Resunga FM/Gulmi, Aadhikhola FM/Syangja, Dhaulagiri FM/Baglung, Sinagree FM/Chitwan, Nepalbani FM/Ilam, Radio Dhading FM/Dhading, Jagaran FM/Surkhet, ABC Radio FM/Kathmanu, Kalinchowk FM/Dolakha and Radio Jansanchar FM/Kavre).

Through those kind of programme, we can clearly see awareness in community level increasing. People starts to send queries, the mental patients are referring by the different partners and the trained health worker and NGO staffs are creating awareness through their regular programme too. A mentally ill patient of Palpa- district got new life after listening radio by the neighbour and he brought her for the treatment and now she is okay.
 

 


The community mental health programme continued support in the area of academical programme and the link with LNC (classes for BN campus programme).

The collaboration with the health autorities at district, regional and central level have increased in implementation of Community Mental Health Programme. CMC-Nepal is supporting to National Health Training Centre (NHTC) in the revision of training manual of senior auxiliary health workers. NHTC has agreed to add more components of common mental health disorders. CMC-Nepal supported to conduct mental health training for the senior auxiliay health workers in Surkhet and Pokhara in regional training on centre on request.

CMC-Nepal has been involved in National Mental Health Network (NMHN), aiming to promote mental health in Nepal through the joint collaboration and effort. The seperate division of mental health in Ministry of Health, reactivate of mental health policy, formulation of mental health legislation and integration of mental health service into the exisitng health care delivery system are the main issues addressing by this network.

The psychosocial Support Programme in Bajhang, Mugu, Okhaldunga, Dhading, Morang, Surkhet, Gulmi, Palpa and Pokhara is now continued. 10 NGO and hospital staff received 10-day psychosocial couselling training from CMC-Nepal in June 2009. A total of 391 conflict affected, domestic voilence affected and depressive patients received primary level psychosocial support through the trained psychosocial support workers from January to June 2009.

The collaboration between CMC-Nepal and St. Xavier social service is still on. CMC-Nepal provided psychosocial support for the staff, mental health services for chornical ill patient and material support.

CMC-Nepal has given a lot of importance to train and build the capacity our staff. Our staff intended different conferences and classes in international level (USA, India) and in national level, in Nepal. Different workshop and supervision sessions has been regularly organized for the entire staff.

The Child Mental Health Programme has been continued in Dolakha and Kavre districts. 69 schools and 16 health facilities have been selected to implement the programme. The third and fourth module training for primary teachers, first and second module training for secodary teachers and workshop for school's head teacher's and supervision were conducted in the second half-of the year (January - June 2009). CMC-Nepal distributed stationery for the poor students, play materials and child friendly classroom managing materials such as star chart board, student job chart, self presentation board, message board, feeling sharing board and student creativity display board to the schools. Message boards and hoarding boards have been placed in the schools and public places to create awareness about child mental health issues. Radio programme was also broadcasted from 2 FM stations of the districts.

Trained teacher identified 129 problematic children; manged 90 cases in the schools by themselves.56 children received couselling service from child guidance clinic (CGC) of Dolakha district in the period of January to June 2009. 185 mentally ill patients identified and received mental health service from the traine health workers in the same period.

Mental health training for the doctors and paramedical staff, supervision of trained teachers and health workers, workshops to the volunteer students about life skill, parental workshop and interactions with FCHVs, mother groups, Health Facility Management Committee Members are the major activities carried out from July - October 2009. A mental health camp together with Dhulikhel Hospital conducted in Kattikedeurali of Kavre district in October 09, where 21 mentally ill patients received mental health and counselling services. 2 events of mass exhibition organized in Kavre district, where 900 people observed the exhibition and received basic mental health information. A five-day psychosocial counselling training for NGO and hospital staff conducted in Kavre district. CMC-Nepal is continuing child guidance clinic in Dolakha district and planning to start in Kavre district in coordination with Dhulikhel Hospital.

The Mala II Project is still running in four districts (Salyan, Jumla, Dailekh and Rolpa). Supervision field visits together with the Social Field Workers are conducted regularly. A total of 811 conflict affected children from 347 families received psychosocial support from the trained psychosocial support workers during 3 years period (January 2007 to October 2009).

Our support for Effective Empowerment (SEE) to the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) has been mainly conducted on seven projects (VSBK, F-Skill, RHDP, NSCFP, LILI, Advocacy Forum and SEP/Alliance). A social mobilization project in Khotang district has been started from October 2009.

CMC-Nepal is continuously building the capacity of social mobilizers in order to deal with the different problems (sexual harrassement, domestic voilence, nutritional risk of the children) of the kilns workers. A five-day training in peer education has completed in October 2009. Training in psychosocial counsellig, supervision workshop and field visits also conducted in this period.

A psychosocial support project for the HIV/AIDS affected children and women (CABA) has been started in Aachham district in the funding support of UNICEF-Nepal since 2009 July. Training manuals for the psychosocial support workers and health workers has been developed. Psychosocial counselling training for the NGO and government staff and clinical counselling (mental health) training for the doctors and paramedical staff has been conducted in October 2009.

CMC-Nepal organized it's 7th General Assembly on 4th October 2009. General Assembly elected nine members of executive board in the chairmanship of Rebecca Sinha for another 3 years.

July 2008 - February 2009

CMC-Nepal is continuing the community mental health programme in 10 districts of the Western Region and also Dhading, Makwanpur, Bajhang, Surkhet, Mugu, Ilam, Okhaldunga districts.

The support in Okhaldunga Community Hospital is also continuing. We conducted mental health clinical supervision for trained health staff and also capacity building to the doctors. Likewise conducted supervion on psychosocial work. A detoxication camp has been conducted where 10 patients (Alcohol Dependence syndrome) were admitted.

Mental health camp were organized in Ilam and Bajhang districts. Altogether, 355 psychiatric cases were diagnosed out of 545. In the same time, Mental health exhibitions were organized and approximately 1700 people received basic mental health informations.

The community radio programme is running well, with seven new agreements (Shreenaga FM, Resunga FM, Aadhikhola FM, Dhaulagiri FM, Sinagree FM, Ilam FM and Dhading FM).

Through those kind of programme, we can clearly see awarness in community level increasing. People starts to send queries, the mental patients are reffering by the different partners and the trained health worker and NGO staffs are creating awarness through their regular programme too.

The psychosocial Support Programme has been very active with follow up in Surkhet, Bajhang, Gulmi, Palpa, Pokhara, Morang. 637 mental illness cases are indentified and we are providing primary level psychosocial support. Awarness is raised on mental health.

The collaboration between CMC-Nepal and St. Xavier social service is still on. CMC-Nepal provided psychosocial support for the staff ,mental health services for chornical ill patient and material support.

CMC-Nepal supported AMDAs' staff and RCRD in psychosocial support training.

The Child Mental Health Programme has extended the programme in Kavre district and also continued the previous programme in Dolakha district.

The Mala II Project is still running in four districts (Salyan, Jumla, Dailekh and Rolpa). Regular supervision workshop to the Social Field Workers and field visits took place in the last months.

August 2007 - January 2008

CMC-Nepal is continuing the community mental health programme in 10 districts of the Western Region and Makwanpur district.

The support in Okhaldunga Community Hospital is also continuing. Dhading, Surkhet, Mugu, Bajhang and Ilam districts are included in the plan from this year. The capacity of health staff in previous working areas has been further built through supervision visits and meetings, and in new programme areas capacity building has just begun.

During this reporting period, a total of 19 health staff, from government health institutions, the Mission Hospitals and Dhulikhel Medical Institute, have received training and supervision in mental health. A further 11 service points are also in the process of becoming functional and providing mental health services (making a total of 30 service points).

The mental health training for doctors at district and regional hospitals was a significant event, helping to increase caseloads. Paramedical staff have in turn received guidance inputs from the doctors. As a result a total of 3,014 new cases were identified and are receiving treatment.

CMC-Nepal is producing a community radio programme about mental health, broadcast through five different radio stations (Palpa, Matwanpar, Surkhet, Dhading). It is known that access to radio is widespread and it is an effective way of creating awareness at community level.

The community mental health and psychosocial support programme is also creating psychosocial awareness and building the capacity and numbers of psychosocial support workers at community level, in order to provide primary level psychosocial support services. Local NGO staff and volunteers are receiving training and supervision in Surkhet and Gulmi districts (34 participants, 2 NGOs).

CMC-Nepal's support to Chhimeki (a NGO working on nutrition for poor and marginalised children in Kathmandu Metropolitan City) in psychosocial approaches was continued this year. Psychosocial counselling training was provided for new staff. (14 participants)

CMC-Nepal is creating awareness in mental health and providing direct services for problematic children or children in need at the social service centre of St. Xavier School.

CMC-Nepal has strengthened its relationship with two major mental health institutions- the Mental Hospital and Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health.
