Study of the functioning level in people having psychosocial disabilities

Free Download | Introduction: People suffering with psychosocial disability experienced high level of stigma that affect daily functioning and contributing in burden of disease. Change in functional level of people because of the psychosocial disability is not much studied in Nepal. Present study aims to explore the level of functioning in treatment receiving mentally ill persons. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on purposive sample of 120 people suffering from mental illness (psychosocial disabilities) for more than two years and was receiving treatment from health facilities in four remote districts of Nepal. WHO-DAS-2 Nepali version was used to assess functioning level during follow treatment visit in health facilities. Data were analysed using SPSS 20th version mainly for descriptive statistics. Result: Participants age ranged from 18-60 years with mean age 29.5, with gender distribution 58.6% male and 41.4% female. Level of functioning was increasingly affected in female (46 mean score against 38 in male), increased score in domain of cognition, getting along, life activities and participation in female while getting alone, participation and life activities mean score increased in male. Socio-demographic factors such as female, farmer in occupation and duration of illness were correlated significantly with level of functioning. The core questions (S1-S12) score was correlated significantly (p=.03) with over all functioning (H1-H3) over a month period. Conclusion: Level of functioning is affected significantly in people having psychosocial disabilities; impairment is higher in female gender. Findings indicate need of awareness in mental health. |
